Researchers at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) in Australia have created a point-of-care blood test capable of detecting iron deficiency within 15 minutes.

The test is being assessed for use in Sub-Saharan Africa, where it could become the first validated rapid diagnostic for iron deficiency in the region.

Iron deficiency continues to be a significant health challenge worldwide, particularly in countries with limited resources.

Diagnosing the condition in these areas often remains difficult due to restricted access to laboratory facilities and trained staff.

The new blood test is designed to address these barriers by providing reliable results directly at the point of care using only a finger-prick blood sample and without the need for specialised laboratory equipment.

It differs from existing rapid ferritin tests by including a built-in reference line that allows healthcare workers to identify iron deficiency more clearly.

WEHI reports that the test’s results strongly correlate with those of gold-standard laboratory methods available in high-income countries.

The design aims to help clinicians make faster and more accurate decisions about patient care, including maternal health.

WEHI senior research officer Dr Emily Eriksson co-led the team that developed this test.

Eriksson said: “Iron infusions are among the most prescribed medicines in Australia—reflecting the prevalence of iron deficiency and availability of effective treatment options.

“But simple methods to diagnose the condition remain largely out of reach for those living outside of high-income countries. Our test could close this health inequity gap and transform the lives of millions of women and babies around the world.”

The test is being prepared for real-world trials in Kenya and Malawi, with contract manufacturing under international standards.

These studies will gather evidence on performance and help establish a path towards regulatory approval and broader distribution. Support for the evaluation comes from the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation.

The project involves collaborators from Australia, Kenya, and Malawi.
