Verathon, a US-based airway management solutions provider, has launched its first single-use video laryngoscope dubbed Spectrum QC eco.
Made using bio-based plastics, Spectrum QC eco combines an eco-friendly design with the performance capabilities of GlideScope.
The video laryngoscope features an 80% bio-based plastic shell, using the mass balance approach. It is certified by International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS).
Verathon said that the bio-based materials offer a 74% lower carbon footprint compared to fossil fuel-based alternatives, without sacrificing performance.
Difficult Airway Society UK president and Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust anesthetics and critical care medicine consultant Imran Ahmad said: “This is great news for the anaesthesia community, as we strive to deliver sustainable, safe healthcare.
“Using Spectrum QC eco will help us achieve this. We now have a single-use VL blade which not only functions as well as a reusable VL, but also incorporates bio-based materials which have a lower carbon footprint.”
According to Verathon, hospitals are focusing on reducing waste, improving energy efficiency, and seeking better alternatives for medical supplies as sustainability becomes a growing priority for global healthcare organisations.
This commitment aligns with Verathon’s dedication to providing new products to clinicians while always considering the environment.
Verathon president Earl Thompson said: “As a market leader in single-use medical devices, we are demonstrating that exceptional patient care and care for the environment are not mutually exclusive.
“We are excited about launching Spectrum QC eco to our customers. This is a big step forward and further reinforces our commitment to sustainability.”
