Masimo has received the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for the expanded use of delta haemoglobin parameters on its O3 Regional Oximetry.
The new parameters, ΔcHb, ΔHHb, and ΔO2Hb, are now applicable for cerebral and somatic uses across all patient groups, including paediatric and neonatal.
They provide clinicians with enhanced insights into changes in tissue oxygen saturation, aiding in more informed clinical decisions.
Integrated with Masimo’s Root platform, the O3 system employs near-infrared spectroscopy to monitor regional oxygen saturation (rSO2) continuously.
Masimo global clinical affairs and solutions SVP Basil Matta said: “Masimo SedLine provides a measure of brain activity and thus indirectly oxygen demand.
“O3 provides an indication of the balance between vital organ oxygen delivery, by tracking relative changes in oxygenated haemoglobin (O2Hb), and demand, by tracking the changes in deoxygenated haemoglobin (HHb).
“By using SedLine and O3 together, the clinician can investigate why this balance may have changed, as indicated by concomitant changes in delta haemoglobin parameters, and take advantage of this complementary information.
“Masimo Root with O3 and SedLine is a true Brain Health Platform and provides a truly multimodal view of the brain.”
The delta haemoglobin parameters help clinicians understand variations better than regional oxygen saturation (rSO2), may not reveal the causes of imbalance.
Research highlights the advantages of the parameters in managing cerebral physiology, particularly in cardiac surgery patients.
Unlike traditional oximeters, O3’s parameters help characterise the causes of cerebral desaturation through changes in cerebral metabolism and blood flow.
Masimo said that O3 Regional Oximetry provides reliable tissue oxygenation data with trending and absolute accuracy.
With delta haemoglobin parameters now available for all applications, O3 offers personalised insights into patient physiology, said the company.
Together with its SedLine Brain Function Monitoring solution, Masimo delivers a comprehensive brain health solution on a single platform.
