Intuitive has secured the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance for its latest innovation in advanced energy instrumentation, the Vessel Sealer Curved, for use with its multiport da Vinci systems.
The Vessel Sealer Curved is a fully wristed, advanced bipolar electrosurgical instrument that can seal, cut, grasp, and dissect tissue.
The instrument is designed to improve surgical outcomes in minimally invasive robotic-assisted procedures.
It is the medical technology company’s first advanced energy instrument to receive FDA clearance for the transection of lymphatic vessels.
The FDA approval highlights the instrument’s multifunctionality and precision, which are critical in complex surgical environments.
Intuitive da Vinci platforms and product operations senior vice president and general manager Iman Jeddi said: “We designed Vessel Sealer Curved to give surgeons greater precision in narrow anatomical spaces.
“By combining the trusted performance of Vessel Sealer Extend with a slimmer, curved jaw profile, we’re helping surgeons work more efficiently and confidently across a wide range of procedures.”
The Vessel Sealer Curved is engineered with a slim, curved jaw that follows the natural contours of anatomy, enhancing visibility and control in tight spaces and critical structures.
Its mechanical blade cuts closer to the tip, providing versatility as a dissector, which is essential for intricate surgical tasks.
The FDA has cleared the Vessel Sealer Curved for grasping and blunt dissection of tissue, as well as bipolar coagulation and mechanical transection of blood vessels.
Its scope includes veins and arteries up to 7mm in diameter, lymphatic vessels, and tissue bundles fitting within the instrument’s jaws.
However, the instrument is not indicated for tubal sterilisation or tubal coagulation procedures.
Recently, Intuitive obtained CE mark for its da Vinci 5 Surgical System, for use across various surgical areas, including urological, gynaecological, and general laparoscopic procedures.
The certification allows the system to be used in both adult and paediatric minimally invasive procedures, covering endoscopic surgeries in the abdominopelvic and thoracic regions.
The da Vinci 5 represents the latest addition to Intuitive’s robotic-assisted surgical technology, incorporating over 150 enhancements from previous models. It is designed to improve surgical capabilities with features such as Force Feedback technology, a realistic 3D vision system, and an ergonomic surgeon console.
