Health Canada has granted authorisation for the Dexcom G7 15 Day continuous glucose monitor (CGM) for adults aged 18 years and older with diabetes.
Offering 15.5 days of wear, the device supplies real-time glucose data. It is intended to support ongoing glucose management.
The device demonstrates an 8% mean absolute relative difference (MARD). Additional features include a 12-hour grace period for replacing finished sensors and compatibility with mobile applications to review glucose trends and patterns.
It features waterproofing and direct connectivity to Apple Watch, allowing users to follow their glucose levels without needing their phone.
The system also enables users to share data remotely with caregivers or family members and offers options for customisable alerts.
Dexcom has stated that the G7 15 Day system reduces the frequency of sensor replacements per month, potentially cutting material waste.
At this stage, it is not yet available for purchase in Canada despite regulatory authorisation.
Dexcom Canada vice-president and general manager André Côté said: “Small improvements can make a meaningful difference for people living with diabetes. Dexcom G7 15 Day reflects our ongoing commitment to simpler, more seamless diabetes management.
“Our focus is on ensuring that when the product becomes available, Canadians living with diabetes and their healthcare providers have the support, education, and experience they need from day one. We look forward to sharing more details as we move closer to availability.”
Dexcom develops and commercialises biosensing technologies aimed at diabetes management.
Last month, the US Food and Drug Administration cleared Dexcom’s Stelo glucose biosensor system for children, making it the first over-the-counter CGM for paediatric pre-diabetic and diabetic patients to be cleared by the agency.
